The aim of the Department

The aim of the department is the provision of education, high level expertise and specialization, as well as the development of scientific and technological research in emerging fields of Informatics and Telecommunications, with the aim of creating executives of a high scientific level. The two-dimensional approach to IT and Telecommunications subjects, allows the creation of professionals with high specialization and attractiveness in the labor market.

The Department of Informatics and Telecommunications has traversed a course of more than twenty years, strengthening its academic position over time in an increasingly competitive environment. Along this course, the driving force and the guide are the new developments and trends in informatics and telecommunications, so that the professional profile and scientific resources of the graduates keep pace with the modern demands and needs of technology, can follow the future developments and contribute to the promotion of science.

A main goal of the department is the development of intense educational and exploratory activity in the modern territories of Informatics and Telecommunications. For the academic community of the department, the production of new knowledge and the training of graduates that are able to design, develop and contribute in the production of Information, Computer and Telecommunication systems and Services, that meet every need, create new possibilities and cover all population groups, comes first.

The modern academic environment requires immediate and versatile adjustment of the provided education and research to the current and imminent conditions, as they are formed in a globalized and competitive context. The development in the scientific areas covered by the Department shows almost exponential progress, as new scientific fields emerge and develop extensively, which attract the interest of the scientific community. Examples include: Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Processing and Analysis, new generations of Mobile Communications and services, Tele-education and Tele-working services, the adoption of Augmented and Virtual Reality in education, the design and development of advanced methods for Automated Medical Diagnosis, the application of Gamification in various sectors of the modern economy, the rapid adoption of Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain technologies, 'Smart' Sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Services (IoS), digital transformation, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (I4.0), which combined with Cloud Computing highlight the need for Cybersecurity and fortification of computing systems and online services.

The Professors of the Department have a large number of published works in leading scientific journals, have developed significant international collaborations with related departments abroad, and participate in the scientific committees of internationally recognized journals and conferences. The professional rights of the Department's graduates are secured by Presidential Decree 44/08-04-2009 and are equivalent to those of graduates from similar Departments of greek Universities.
