Informatics & Telecommunications (NPS)

Department of Informatics and Telecommunications Curriculum

Duration of Studies

The standard duration of studies is 8 semesters, and each course of the Department is included in one of them. Students admitted to the Department follow the Undergraduate Program in «Informatics and Telecommunications» (ISCED codes: 061 “Information and Communication Technologies” and 0714 “Electronics and Automation”), leading to the acquisition of a level 6 Bachelor's degree in Informatics and Telecommunications, according to the National Qualifications Framework. After obtaining their bachelor's degree, graduates, besides pursuing their respective professional careers, can continue their studies with the aim of obtaining a specialized postgraduate level 7 diploma, and/or acquiring a level 8 doctoral degree.

Curriculum Structure

The student must initially attend 30 compulsory courses which cover an extensive, yet essential, body of knowledge in Computer Science and Telecommunications, common to all students. The courses are divided into:

  • Foundation Courses (8 courses)
  • Scientific Area (22 courses)
  • The student also selects a Skills Development course. Then the student delves into the areas of their choice, depending on their selection of courses, from the 5 available specialization streams.

    Course Streams

Each stream consists of a set of (5 to 7) courses, through which specialized technical knowledge is provided on the specific subject. The supported course streams by the department are as follows:

    • COURSE STREAM: SOFTWARE
    • COURSE STREAM: INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS AND APPLICATIONS
    • COURSE STREAM: COMPUTING SYSTEMS
    • COURSE STREAM: TELECOMMUNICATIONS
    • COURSE STREAM: NETWORKS

    Course Categories

  • Core Courses (C):
  • Core courses (C) are offered in the first 6 semesters of the curriculum and are common and mandatory for all students.

  • Skills Development Courses (SD):
  • Skills Development Courses are offered in the 6th semester of studies.

  • Compulsory Elective Courses (CE):
  • They are structured into five 'streams' of courses and are offered during the 6th, 7th, and 8th semester.

    Undergraduate Thesis

The undergraduate thesis is not mandatory and is completed during the 7th and 8th semester of study.

    Internship

In the new curriculum, the internship is offered after the 6th semester on an optional basis, for a duration of 2 months, and can be carried out in both public and private sectors, as well as in businesses within the European Union under European programs. To participate, the student must have successfully completed at least 25 compulsory courses.
