The Department of Informatics and Telecommunications has been on a journey of over twenty years, during which it has taken significant steps towards maturation, stabilization, and strengthening of its academic position in an increasingly competitive environment. Driving this journey is the engine of new developments and modern trends in computer science and telecommunications, so that the profile and scientific resources of the graduates are in line with the contemporary demands and needs of technology. They can keep pace with future developments and contribute to the advancement of science.
The scientific areas covered by the Department are facing exponential growth in challenges, as they are widely expanding and giving rise to numerous new scientific fields that garner the interest of the scientific community and attract corresponding funding. Indicatively, these include: Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Processing and Analysis, new generations of mobile telephony and 5G services, and the design of 6G, tele-education and telecommuting services (which have experienced explosive growth worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic), the adoption of Augmented and Virtual Reality in Education, the Design and Development of advanced methods of automated medical diagnosis, the application of gamification in various sectors of the modern economy, the rapid adoption of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies, smart sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Services (IoS), Digital Transformation and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (I4.0), which combined with Cloud Computing highlight the need for cybersecurity and research for fortifying computing systems and internet services.
The development and evolution of the Department closely follow the advancements and modern trends in science, contributing to them through research while simultaneously upgrading and integrating its educational activities into the new reality. The current academic environment requires immediate and flexible adaptation of provided education and research in the fields of computer science and telecommunications to the current and emerging conditions shaping a globalized and competitive framework. In this context, the priority lies in generating new knowledge and educating graduates capable of designing, developing, and contributing to the production of computing and telecommunication systems and services available to increasingly wider masses of the population, covering every need, creating new opportunities, and addressing groups with special requirements (e.g., people with disabilities, marginalized groups, etc.).
The strategic planning of the department takes into consideration all the above, aiming to provide appropriate responses so that the department's progress aligns with social and economic development, technological advancements, and research trends, integrated into the broader institutional planning.
