Studies in Arta

Arta, one of the most beautiful areas in Greece, is a city in the Region of Epirus with a population of 24,427 people. It serves as the capital of the Arta regional unit and is the second-largest city in Epirus. Bordered by the Tzoumerka mountain range and the Ambracian Gulf, its landscape combines the beauty of Greek mountains with the shallow beaches of the Ambracian Gulf and the fertile valley of the Arachthos River that crosses through it. Arta is built upon the ruins of Ancient Ambracia. It is adorned with its Byzantine churches, its castle, clock tower, notable neoclassical buildings, and above all, its famous symbol, the legendary Bridge of Arta, which is built upon a haunted soul, the wife of the Bridge Master. There are many cultural clubs, sports clubs, an open-air theater in the castle, a Historical and Folklore Museum, as well as an Exhibition Center.

Arta is a fairly safe and quiet city for both visitors and residents alike. In the city center, where the famous pedestrian street of Arta is located, there are several options for clothing, footwear, and accessory stores where everyone can find what they are looking for. As for entertainment in the city of Arta, the cafes, taverns, restaurants, as well as its nightlife venues, both in the city center and on the bridge, are capable of offering visitors whatever they desire and allowing them to taste the local delights of Arta.

Finally, Arta was the headquarters of the former Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Epirus until September 2018, when it was abolished according to Law 4559/3-8-2018. The Schools and Departments of the former TEI of Epirus were incorporated into the University of Ioannina by the same law. Today, the following departments of the University of Ioannina operate in Arta:

  • Department of Informatics and Telecommunications
  • Department of Music Studies
  • Department of Agriculture

The Department of Informatics and Telecommunications was founded in 1998 and integrated into the University of Ioannina in 2018 according to Article 2 of Law 4559. Its main mission is to cultivate the science of Computer Science and Telecommunications, computing systems for information processing and transmission, as well as various applications thereof. It aims to equip students with fundamental knowledge and skills in the field, as well as specialized knowledge, enabling them to have a solid scientific foundation and fully meet the increasing demands of the professional field. The Department comprises distinguished and internationally recognized professors who make the course quite interesting and original, as they are interested in and have close communication with every student of the school, trying in every way to help them. Additionally, it has three (3) Research Laboratories, which deal with innovative projects related to education and training, entrepreneurship, the environment, tourism, culture, and health, implemented by the research team of the Laboratory, consisting of professors, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, graduate, and undergraduate students.

In conclusion, it is now well-known that Arta is a city suitable for students, combining safety and a good quality of life so that each student can spend unforgettable college years!
